Risks and side effects
The purpose of the information found in the following is neither to spread fear and panic nor to provide instructions on how to dope. The aim is simply to put the facts on the table in order to educate the public. The Austria Codex of medical products reveals that every medication, regardless of how harmless, has side effects that can also occur when taken with medical indication. When the substances listed below are misused for doping in sport, usually very high doses are used, in a magnitude that no rational doctor would ever prescribe.
S1. Anabolic agents
Next to EPO, anabolic agents are clearly the most widespread and well-known doping substances in existence. Efficient methods of analysis have been developed in recent years to allow this "classic" doping substance to be identified even long after use.
showS2. Peptide hormones, growth factors and related substances
The category of peptide hormones, growth factors and related substances includes substances having a variety of structures and effects. These proteins, produced by the body itself for the most part, act as chemical messengers to stimulate the production of other substances.
showS3. Beta-2 agonists
Beta-2 agonists, also known as beta-2 adrenergic agonists, have the effect of dilating the bronchial passages and are thus used in the treatment of asthma. In some cases Athletes requiring such a substance for the treatment of asthma must apply for a therapeutic use exemption (TUE).
showS4. Hormone and metabolic modulators
Five different classes are prohibited: Aromatase inhibitors, selective estrogen receptor modulators, other anti-estrogenic substances, agents modifying myostatin function(s) and Metabolic modulators.
showS5. Diuretics and other masking agents
In addition to diuretics, this category also includes substances having the potential of modifying a doping sample, influencing the elimination of substances or of masking the presence of substances.
